I write what I know and I know and what I live, parenting, gardening, sewing, crafting, an odd love for pyrex, - all of it and more is fair game. I take a lot of pictures too, I heart my camera. Enjoy what you read, enjoy the pictures, and please give me feedback, I like to hear from you!Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.comBlogger81125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-78391310673531643472013-07-11T17:01:00.001-04:002013-07-11T17:01:59.351-04:00<div><p>For the first time in a long while I put baby Bo down for a nap in my own bed in hopes of a longer nap. So far it is working. He is at times a very calm sleeper.</p>
<p>Buzz and I have spent the afternoon playing with his Playmobil people (a new love of his thanks to his Auntie) and playing outside. More accurately he played outside while I tidied the kitchen and got a load of dishes going. Usually we don't put the dishwasher on until later in the evening due to the cost of hydro during the day, but today the piles of dishes seemed to be towering and so on it goes.  </p>
<p>We have been soaking up the summer as much as we can around here; berry picking, long walks, visits to wading pools, playing in the backyard. The one thing Buzz has been dying to do is camp in the backyard and this is the one thing that has been a little hard to get done. There has been so much rain that the yard is often saturated and far too wet to set the tent up out there and so we finally set it up in the playroom. He was thrilled! We will be leaving it up for a little while as they are having a great time playing in it, this tiny tent was well woth the clearance price. At 5x6 feet it is perfect for indoor campouts.</p>

Highways were flooded, rivers swelled, we went out to the library. Things here in town were fine only fleetingly touched by chaos. I think we will go searching for puddles tomorrow. Tonight when the rain had calmed a little Buzz took to the curbside to do a little puddle dancing.</p>
<p>Before the rains came today Buzz had a chance to play outside, painting polka dots and swirls with a little chalk paint (cornstarch, food colouring, and water). This is an extremely messy activity, but so much fun, I like to get in on the painting as well. </p>
<p>Hopefully those caught in the flooding waters this afternoon are climbing into warm and dry beds tonight. We are certainly thankful for ours.</p>

We hace all grown a little older around here. Our baby is walking, the boy has grown ever so tall. We have moved from our beloved Toronto to a town and we are spending these long summer days exploring sidewalks and trails.</p>
<p>I have much to write about but only fleeting moments in which to do so. For now some photos from the past while, moments of exquisite delight.</p>

Every morning Ed brings him from his own bed into ours before he leaves for work, he does the same with Bo, thus this morning Buzz woke up to Bo kicking him in his belly. He was not impressed. I moved Bo and told Buzz to close his eyes, have a beautiful dream, and then wake back up with a smile on his face. He did and I took some photos. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This last one is my favourite. This sums up our mornings, Buzz laughing from jumping on the bed, Bo staring at you with his deep blue eyes, the boys holding hands. In the three months since the arrival of Bo the boys have become close, Bo watches Buzz when he is near, Buzz requests Bo at night when he won't fall asleep, holds his hand when they're together. When they are happy, they are lovely. </span><br />

<div style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;">
<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipcxWNevt5IA0gk8276vKQNoX0lq2e-SNY3RLW9Kel4TBT2vQxZjWj5Ma43pJ857hyjyfMc4n32oupJQhWjxnsNztJ4cpFfoO00wheb2e94PMokjZqc6ZaeVtNYwA5hKuGBl0q3MS1-Us/" /></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">My boy has a love of cars. The older boy. The young boy so far only has a love of familiar faces, warm baths, and milk. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Back to the older boy and his love of cars. We encouraged it for sure by watching the UK version of <a href="http://www.topgear.com/uk/" target="_blank">Top Gear</a> while Buzz played nearby on his road map rug with his giant collection of tiny cars. We buy him said cars when we are on shopping trips. For $1 and change he is thrilled, we talk about the colour, make, model, and year. This generally provides us with a long conversation (by three year old standards at least). </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Much to our delight Buzz started to recognize cars while we were out and about. Chevrolet, Mercedes,Honda, BMW, car after car he will name them, our version of the billboard alphabet game.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">When asked about his favourite car he might tell you Lamborghini, but when asked what he will drive when he gets big, the answer most definitely is a Toyota. My whole family drives Toyotas and so this practical decision is quite likely in his genes. He would probably choose a red Prius just like the little one he often carries in his pocket.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">If you look at pictures of Buzz you are likely to see a car in his hand or beside him on the floor, he has one with him at all times. I find them everywhere. The diaper bag, underfoot, the stroller, the car, in my bed, in Buzz's bed, in kitchen cupboards and for certain in the bathtub, they are everywhere lest he need one at a moments notice.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu4vD1wY7UKBTFWz2ckFqMU_WdC0Wq0mnHWjxKpD7MqPZQhlmOcl6yTAVyGDxRKPG_M2aRNMl01pSDqqeA5713ezcgSDuPvmWNlVINKNDcdilFud8fswakEJM5spwqpxCcYDfVlQKLW2Q/s1600/022.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiu4vD1wY7UKBTFWz2ckFqMU_WdC0Wq0mnHWjxKpD7MqPZQhlmOcl6yTAVyGDxRKPG_M2aRNMl01pSDqqeA5713ezcgSDuPvmWNlVINKNDcdilFud8fswakEJM5spwqpxCcYDfVlQKLW2Q/s640/022.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We can't wait to take him to the car show next year, his eyes will be as big as saucers. My hometown is home to a great many classic cars, some of which are brought out to be shown along the roadside once a year. We were unable to go to see them this year, but when next we go and he is able to see his teeny muscle cars in life size greatness he will likely be thrilled.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">While children often go through stages of things they like, their interests changing on a whim, our sons' appreciation for cars has been here since before he could speak. I suspect this interest will stick around for a while. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I bet his dreams are filled with cars (and hopefully rainbows and unicorns too), he does after all go to sleep surrounded by them. I love that he is so enamored with them, it is endearing and of course endlessly entertaining on road trips. </span><br />

Today we went on one of our jaunts down to Evergreen Brickworks to take some family photos and let Buzz run around and have some fun. This is the first time we've gone down there with Bo with the intent to take a family photo. I think it turned out great and am planning on getting it printed to put up on our wall. </div>

When planning an adventure around the greater Toronto area we are often on the lookout for great playgrounds. While any playground can be fun and enjoyable, there are definitely some factors that make them more or less fun for both Buzz and myself (Bo doesn't yet care). Being the type of person who plans our outings I usually like to hop on the internet the evening before and check out whats in a given area. I always look for peoples opinions on local playgrounds, I'm almost always disappointed with the amount of info that is out there. While you can sometimes find info on the parks in general, information on the playgrounds themselves are lacking and so I'm going to attempt to fill the void.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The format of my playground reviews may change a little as we find things that we love or despise about various playgrounds, but I hope that I can at least give a little insight into the condition, amenities, and general awesomeness of playgrounds around the city. I will do my best to include some photos, although they will most likely be from my phone as opposed to to the camera.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
First up is our playground of choice for this evening : <b>Bayview Village Park</b>.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<b>Location </b>: On the east side of Bayview Ave, north of Sheppard.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
This park is within walking distance to the Bayview stop on the Sheppard Subway Line. If you are driving to the park there is a parking lot which has about 25 spaces.We've only been here a couple times, but both times we were able to get a parking spot without any problems. As this park is surrounded by a residential area I suspect a lot of people walk over.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
From a parents point of view I think the best thing about this park is that it has a fence separating it from Bayview Ave. Without the fence it would be unplayable as the playground equipment is located fairly close to the road. The fence runs all along the west side of the park and seems to generally contain the kids.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
There are three separate play structures with slides, they seem to be for toddlers, young kids, and older kids as they are three different sizes. I suspect that they have been there for a while as they are made of wood, not metal and plastic like is commonly seen in most playgrounds. They are all pretty simple structures, but the kids seem to enjoy them. The surface under the playgrounds are either covered in sand or soft rubber. The sand is not deep enough to play in and is closer to teeny pebbles in some areas.<br />

<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
This park has a splash pad!! The sprinklers are in a concrete pad and the button to turn them on was difficult for the toddlers to activate, but all the kids running around seemed to the enjoy the water. The sprinklers are pretty basic, the only structure on the splash pad is a water tower, no water spouting animals or cat tails here. We were here around dinnertime and the splash pad was mostly shaded which was nice. The splash pad seems to be wheelchair accessible, however most of the playground is not all that wheelchair friendly.<br />

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Unfortunately the age of this playground is starting to show, there is some minor graffiti on some things, the benches could use a coat of paint, and the water fountain was leaking terribly. Despite the age and basic play areas this park has a lot going for it. The fence allows parents with more then one kid to watch them comfortably. There are plenty of shady or sunny places for a picnic, playing with a ball, or general running around. There are a decent amount of places to sit and even washrooms (albeit port-a-johns not large enough to fit a stroller). This is a park that we will probably return to as it is near some shops that we frequent. I think that when it was first built the park would have been great, shiny and new is always better than tired and old. It could use some updating and a little maintenance, although I didn't see any trash around, the play areas seemed dusty and a little dirty. </div>

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Above all else this park is pretty average, it has some really good things going for it, but it is also fairly boring looking. Sometimes boring is great for kids, it develops their imaginations, however sometimes its just plain boring. This park leans a little more towards just plain boring.</div>

Have I mentioned we're Blue Jays fans? Since we are lucky enough to live in the same city as a baseball team as great as the Jays we think it is important to take our kids to a game or two. I grew up going to games at Tigers Stadium and loved it, I have great memories of the games. For our kids to experience the game, the stadium, the crowd and the peanuts underfoot, is wonderful.<br />
<br />
This past Saturday we took Bo for his very first game, Buzz having been many times before. Bo slept for the most part, Buzz ate popcorn and got himself a foam finger. It was all very exciting! Bo did manage to open his eyes long enough for us to snap a pic. Although he does not look all that pleased in the photo he was very well behaved and wasn't bothered by all the sights and sounds.<br />

The Jays won and after the game we all went down on the field so that Buzz could run the bases, stepping onto the field was thrilling! We almost always sit way up in the nosebleeds and so being able to go right down and walk on the field was a great experience, the place looked huge from there. </div>

<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
I think the only drawback to going to the games is that we always seem to sit in a somewhat rowdy section, perhaps all the cheap seats are rowdy. This time the rowdy was coming from two separate bachelor parties that happened to be sitting next to one another, they were trying to one up each other with their behaviour. For the most part we take it in stride and security at the stadium are pretty good at keeping people from getting out of control. I suspect that there aren't quite so many trouble makers down in the more expensive seats, but as we can't afford to get those tickets, we will just have to put up with the bachelor parties. I suspect a family section up in the cheap seats would go over well. </div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
The staff at the games are always kind and courteous, when I asked one of them if they would take a family photo of us in front of the Jays dugout, they happily agreed to. This is our very first family photo as a family of four. </div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Although these outings aren't always easy they are well worth it. My family got together this past Sunday to celebrate a couple birthdays. Little K was celebrating his very first birthday, while my brother-in-law Mike was celebrating a birthday of a larger number. We all met at a place near Collingwood that my sister and her family were staying at and had a little party, complete with cake, decorations, and hats! Little K's Mama was very busy, we all had our own hat personalized with our first initial, she also whipped up a neon paper chain. I love paper chain! I think I might have to get some pretty paper and make one for above Buzz's room or something, so pretty! </div>

I volunteered to make cakes, one of them was gluten free golden cake, the other was chocolate. Both of the cakes were decorated very traditionally, with cherries and pretty icing. They were yum! I love decorating cakes like these, they are quick to do and end up being so pretty. To sugar the cherries I simply washed them, shook off the big drops of water, and sprinkled sugar on them, they looked beautiful and tasted great. I think if you were more picky about them being totally covered you could paint dry cherries with egg whites before sprinkling on the sugar. I would recommend sprinkling the sugar on the cherries instead of dipping them as that will keep the sugar in the bowl from getting all moist.</div>

I've finally made our summer to-do list - yay! On sunny mornings when the day is stretching ahead of us we sometimes have trouble coming up with things that might be super fun to do, this list will hopefully help with that. There are a few big ticket items on the list (baseball game, going to the ROM) but for the most part the items on the list are simple and fairly easy to do on the fly. </div>

We've actually already started doing some things on the list, specifically getting a treat from the ice cream truck. This was a big exciting moment for Buzz, not only does he love ice cream treats, but he is in love with the ice cream truck that comes to our street. I let him choose whatever he wanted, he decided on a Sponge Bob ice cream treat, Ed and I had strawberry slush. We were all pleased with our treats.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Keep a look out for updates on our to-do list, with any luck will be able to keep ourselves busy and have lots of fun this summer.</span>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-14721077856649683192012-07-11T16:02:00.001-04:002012-07-11T16:02:28.135-04:00Buzz, Papa, and a Bag of Gummy Worms<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Buzz is in love with the show Max and Ruby. Anyone with a toddler who watches television is probably aware of this show, but if you are not it is about a pair of bunny rabbits. Max and Ruby are brother and sister, they take care of each other do things that are apparently irresistibly interesting to a three year old (like making lemonade). Like any little bunny rabbit Max likes his candy, in particular gummy worms, Buzz has taken note of everything Max likes and often lets us know that he would like gummy worms too (among other things like wind up robots and green alien gorillas). This past weekend we met up with my parents at an antique market and after browsing the tables and tables of interesting things we sat down in the trees for a picnic. Buzz was delighted when his Papa pulled out a bag of gummy worms, my Dad was delighted at Buzz's delight, this is the resulting picture. A whole lot of happiness going around.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I suspect there will be more gummy worms during future visits with Papa. </span>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-72772180400227786342012-07-08T20:00:00.003-04:002012-07-08T23:20:28.041-04:00Updates on the Garden<div class="" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
We have been busy at the garden, everything is growing, some is ready to harvest. We ate the peas that are always the first to make an entrance, Buzz loved them the most. Our snap peas were so sweet they tasted like candy!</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
In the past Buzz has been afraid of swings, but this summer he discovered that they are delightfully fun. Luckily there is a swing at the garden and he hops on it whenever we are over there. </div>

I stopped in to Starbucks to grab myself a nice cool coffee beverage and noticed a sign about their 'Grounds for your Garden' program. I happily picked up a free 5 lb bag of coffee grounds and distributed it thoughout the garden, this will hopefully enrich the soil. As a side benefit I had coffee grounds all over my hands and used them to exfoliate my skin a little - my hands have never been so soft! If you have a garden and are close to a Starbucks, head on over and grab yourself a bag of grounds for your own garden.</div>

Buzz has had his share of tumbles at the garden already this year, for the most part he gets up and going right away. He is a rough and tumble kid who's not afraid to dust himself off and keep right on running. This tumble however took a little extra dusting, he even had dirt in his mouth. A quick wash off at the tap and he was as just fine. </div>

Our first carrot of the season! We were anxious to see how they looked and so Ed pulled one up. I think its a cosmic red, Buzz and Ed shared it. While the carrots aren't quite ready to provide us with some decent eating, our first batch of beans are almost ready for us to can. We just got a few more packets of bean and carrot seeds in the mail so that when we pull our the peas out later this week we are able to plant something new.</div>

What was once a family three is now a rather blissful family of four. Our beautiful new son arrived safe and sound three weeks ago and we simply can't get enough of him. The transition from three to four has been surprisingly uneventful, he fits right in and we've just kept on doing the things we were already doing as a family, albeit a little slower and with a whole lot more diaper changes.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
For the sake of my children's privacy I decided a whie back to not use thier real names on the blog. While they both have names steeped in family tradition and a little whimsy I don't feel all that comfortable sharing them. My eldest son is known as Buzz on this blog, the newest member of the family will be known as Bo.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
My labour this time around was faster and easier than last time, while this is almost always the case with second labours I was a little surprised and obviously thrilled that this was the case for me. Bo was born at home (I had Buzz in hospital) with the aid of my midwives and my husband. The beauty of being at home was that we got to relax, sleep in our own bed, and Buzz was able to meet Bo very soon after he was born. </div>

Bo is a beautiful baby, he looks a lot like baby Buzz, with darker hair. For the time at least he is sleeping as well as I could ever hope for, although I suspect that I am used to less sleep anyway. Buzz seems to like him well enough and is happy to show him off to anyone that is interested, he is very gentle with him. It seems as though there haven't been all that many changes with Bo's arrival, instead it is as though he has always been here. We are pretty much back to our normal on the go selves.</div>

I will attempt to keep updating my blog these days, if I'm not writing it isn't for lack of wanting to, but rather for lack of time. I keep an ongoing list of blog posts that I want to write so that when I get a moment I have topics ready to go, the list is getting longer and longer - summer is exciting but busy!</div>

We are getting every closer to the arrival of our newest family addition and so today we took a little time to take some photos of our family before the baby. As usual we went on down to Evergreen Brickworks with our tripod and managed to get a few nice shots in between Buzz's exploration of the kilns.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We spent the rest of this holiday weekend preparing our home as it will soon accommodate 4 as opposed to 3. The crib is up, closets are re-organized, and the baby clothes are washed and put away. With the amount of things we've donated this week we have definitely made room for the baby. We may even get to enjoy a bit of this organized peaceful space before the baby makes his grand entrance. </span>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-57522834546059530292012-05-04T23:48:00.000-04:002012-05-04T23:49:58.243-04:00Pregnancy, a Birthday, and the Arrival of Tulips<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
Well here I am, I am currently 35 weeks pregnant and just as our spring/summer is getting into gear I am slowing down dramatically. My energy level is doing just fine (thanks to the iron I started taking last week),however I am now an incredibly slow walker. I now take the stroller with me places simply so that I have something to push ahead of me to keep my forward momentum going. The stroller also comes in handy when Buzz decides he does not want to go in the same direction that I do, I can no longer pick him up and carry him down the street so he goes in the stroller despite his protests.</div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">
We celebrated Buzz's birthday last month by going on a train ride at his request, a perfect outing for my transit obsessed son. We hopped on the Go Train and rode it out to a park on the water where we had a picnic complete with mason jar birthday cakes, it was a very wonderful day. </div>

Buzz has recently shot up in height and he is enjoying it with every inch of his independent three year old self. He no longer has to stretch to reach the buttons at the crosswalk, and much to his delight he can now see over some store counters. He is becoming more curious and increasingly confident and as sad as it is to watch the baby in him slip away, watching the child in him become more prominent is wonderful. Perhaps Buzz's great moments this month was that he discovered that swings are not as scary as he thought they were. Previously he was terrified of them, not wanting to go anywhere near the swings, however now we can't keep him away, he giggles with the thrill of it all whenever he goes on them. </div>

We have also been working away at the garden, much to Buzz's delight. He now has his own garden tools courtesy of his grandparents, and is anxious to plant seeds. He took a moment this evening to explain to me that the rain comes down and the seeds grow up, I love that he has some understanding of the process. This weekend we plan to plant potatoes and may plant carrots and beets. Our rhubarb has grown so much it is remarkable and the peas that we planted earlier are doing well. Buzz was most excited about the tulips that came up in the garden, we cut one and he carried it around in a coke bottle for the better part of a day, I even caught him giving it a kiss. It is amazing to see how much wonder and appreciation he has for the garden. Below is a picture of Buzz digging in the dirt near his beloved tulips.</div>

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As we get closer to the arrival of our newest family member there seems to be more and more that we need to do and also more and more that we want to do. Trying to find a balance between cleaning and organizing, and enjoying the spring is challenging but with any luck we will manage to be ready for the baby when he gets here. Our main goals are to get our home organized with a space for the baby's crib and swing and to have the garden as completely planted as it can be before our little ones arrival. We also need to create a shady space at the garden so that we can spend time there with the baby. It seems that our summer will be full of excitement!</span><br />

Not only did we go and map out our space but we bought seeds too! This year we've decided to try our hand at some heirloom and rare varieties and I am so excited at how colourful our garden will be.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our garden's before picture looks much different from<a href="http://www.plaidraspberries.blogspot.ca/2011/05/delicious-summer-treat.html"> last years photos</a>. This year there was no fence to be re-built and only a small amount of garden debris to be removed.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMIP7mMHrVewMR7Znd1oV_siH5Q32gKsU22In6S2Cc5hN5xioj7KIDsxbV31NdbHmCARkQLg7lDuoYctQahZzxc5BI5U5g1feRzft1HjilnZLu5Q_ZiEXKV7yQbUO5u4psEmuiQPpyR2E/s1600/gardenbefore2012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="337" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjMIP7mMHrVewMR7Znd1oV_siH5Q32gKsU22In6S2Cc5hN5xioj7KIDsxbV31NdbHmCARkQLg7lDuoYctQahZzxc5BI5U5g1feRzft1HjilnZLu5Q_ZiEXKV7yQbUO5u4psEmuiQPpyR2E/s640/gardenbefore2012.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We picked up our seeds from a <a href="http://www.seeds.ca/ev/events.php">seed exchange/sale</a> in Scarborough and this year we will be growing the following:</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Chioggia Beets</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Atomic Red Carrots</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Cosmic Purple Carrots</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Provider Bush Beans</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Homesteader Peas</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Royal Burgundy Beans</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Sugar Snap Peas</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Russian Blue Potatoes</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Habanero Peppers </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We also bought a few seed packs from a local on-line source, <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/cubits">Cubit's</a>. From them we've ordered golden detroit yellow beets, yellow pair tomatoes, and purple tomatillos. These should arrive sometime in the next week or so. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This year we will be trying our hand at starting some seeds indoors, Buzz and Ed have already started the habanero peppers, we'll start the tomatoes as soon as they arrive. Back at the garden we have already planted peas as they can be planted before the last frost date, this year we started out with a tall trellis so that we don't have to switch it out halfway through as we did last year. Buzz happily planted peas and then created a racetrack in the dirt.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHiWL7wE6Bvltnq22c-hkRDzIoknZ5I7lCOcx2_N56p7qwkTTGBufaDh1rqNTcqJs16_9Yl4qW-567v1NYleYpRDAVUNY0hSDsrJB5W9BYGImHU_1DALs1oOUjTE5DHoBYAKrOO3-O3jg/s1600/buzzmakesaracetrack.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHiWL7wE6Bvltnq22c-hkRDzIoknZ5I7lCOcx2_N56p7qwkTTGBufaDh1rqNTcqJs16_9Yl4qW-567v1NYleYpRDAVUNY0hSDsrJB5W9BYGImHU_1DALs1oOUjTE5DHoBYAKrOO3-O3jg/s640/buzzmakesaracetrack.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">At the end of our Sunday trip to the garden Buzz simply did not want to leave, and so I suspect that despite there being not a lot more to do in the garden at the moment, we will go back at some point this week to let him dig in the dirt.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Last night after Buzz went to sleep I sat down with a very hot bucket of water, some wool, and dish soap, and wet felted several finger puppet bodies. Today they were dry and I was able to needle felt a whole lot of personality into each little puppet. I'm very happy with how they all turned out and will eventually list some if not all on my Etsy shop. I need to figure out the best containers to ship them in before I list them. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL1_Aw7iuun0uXz-uFxgamC5GJeyS_CbmAYcc-8s_3Oowp6_Yxh4Lab2JxSP_dIGg8qdVDNppKBZrp_gyvFvsLnA15TPlYgihHAf-LfjaFg5T8a-Bbq4f10tlvQBxqYgXwUBvuLwa08gM/s1600/fingerpuppet1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL1_Aw7iuun0uXz-uFxgamC5GJeyS_CbmAYcc-8s_3Oowp6_Yxh4Lab2JxSP_dIGg8qdVDNppKBZrp_gyvFvsLnA15TPlYgihHAf-LfjaFg5T8a-Bbq4f10tlvQBxqYgXwUBvuLwa08gM/s320/fingerpuppet1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

These finger puppets are not recommended for kids under 3.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

While I love the name Mrs.Sewbot I feel that it doesn't allow for enough range in products without creating confusion, confusion in a business name is simply no good. The new name of my business is one that you should all be familiar with: Plaid Raspberries. This should keep things nice and cohesive and this name allows me to create whatever I want, whether I sew it, crochet it, or whatever.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I have also opened up a new Facebook page, so find Plaid Raspberries on Facebook and like me. When I have enough people on the page I will be sure to run a contest now and then as well as keep you updated on the blog, Etsy shop, and any upcoming shows I might be doing. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I don't yet have my shop on Etsy up and running, but I will let you all know when I have items there to buy. In the meantime take a look at some items that will most likely be the first to show up in the shop. </span><br />

</div><span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">As you can see Buzz is quite fond of these guys, luckily he has an octopus of his own named Ollie. Ollie was the very first octopus that I made and so is very special indeed. These four Octopi are larger than the original but they are still the perfect size to be toted around by one of their 8 sturdily sewn legs. Each face is hand embroidered and so each one is a little different, some even have eyelashes. All of these octopi are made from recycled wool sweaters, are stuffed with fiberfill and are sturdy enough to throw in the wash on cold and hung to dry. </span>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-80901290983026455112012-03-01T12:52:00.002-05:002012-03-07T12:09:31.583-05:00Saturday Morning at the St.Lawrence Market<div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Despite not having a very cold snowy winter this year, I'm done with it all and am very much ready for spring. Soon the air will turn warm and sweet and I can go back to wearing sneakers instead of giant winter boots... I can't wait!</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We have had a few adventures this winter, whenever there has been a milder day we've taken full advantage of it to explore the city. This past weekend we went down to St.Lawrence Market on a mission to find some wonderful vegetables to cook with a roast later that night. We found some purple, orange, and white carrots, wonderful red onions, and some very nice purple potatoes that went wonderfully with the roast that we ended up cooking on Monday.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Our plans to eat a roast for dinner on the night we brought it and the veggies home was forgotten soon after we ate our lunch and realized that we weren't going to be all that hungry for a big dinner that evening. Lunch that day was amazing. St.Lawrence Market is full of wonderful food, and after some searching Ed managed to find something that was just perfect for my surprisingly picky pregnant self - a pulled pork burrito from Carnicero's. Packed with pulled pork and homemade coleslaw this burrito was quite likely the tastiest meal I've had in quite a while. Ed ate a steak fajita from the same place and quickly proclaimed that he could see himself eating something off of their menu every week. When trying a new food place we always try each others meals and I must say that the fajita was incredibly good as well.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Buzz was less than interested in the food that we offered him and was a little obsessed with the jelly beans that he spied in another shop in the market. We let him eat some jelly beans and an orange for lunch, he was thrilled.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">While we can't wait for the outdoor farmer's markets to re-appear, the St.Lawrence market with their own farmer's market on Saturdays has turned out to be a wonderful place for us to spend our Saturday mornings. The sights, sounds, and amazing food are a welcome addition to any day in the city.</div>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-81989481666644288532011-12-14T17:36:00.001-05:002012-03-01T12:53:12.672-05:00Long time, no write, now for some news!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Well it's been a while, and I have news! We are expecting again! The baby is due at the begining of summer and we are definitely excited although I could do without the morning sickness. I haven't been writing lately due to all the mornig sickness and general exhaustion that my pregnancy has brought me, today however I'm feeling pretty good.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">In other news I now have a tablet which allows me to be a little more spontaneous in blog postings and photo ops. I'll also be able to blog while I'm out and about which is good because that is about the only time that Buzz seems to nap these days. Right now however Buzz is awake so it is time to read, play, and do a little Christmas shopping.</div><br />

The temperature warmed up a little, the sun came out, and we spent some time outside today. There have been a lot of grey skies and rainy days lately so the sunshine was such a wonderful treat. It seemed as though everyone was out taking in the beautiful weather before the very cold weather sets in.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Buzz took a ride on his bike in the park. He's getting very good at it and glides along at quite a speed. He is very fond of riding down hills. He only took one tumble today but he didn't seem at all bothered by it.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">After the park we went to the garden to pull a few weeds, plant some bulbs for next year (tulips for the spring), and grab a couple carrots. Buzz pulled up a wonderful purple carrot, it tasted great. I love the way they look, the purple colour is so deep and rich and the centers are bright orange. If you get the chance, pick up some purple carrots, they have them at some grocery stores although they are more common at farmer's markets. These would be so great for kids, they taste very much like orange carrots but the colour makes them fun and interesting.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />

</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">While at the garden we took in a little of the animal life that resides in the woods that the garden backs onto. A coyote was meandering around the garden plots looking for food, he was a little thin and young looking, hopefully he finds a big groundhog for a good meal. He was skittish enough which was good, he would come close but run off with any noise. We were sure to keep Buzz close although it was very neat for him to see the coyote. Buzz was very good at pointing the coyote out from across the garden. If you'll remember this isn't the first time we've seen a <a href="http://plaidraspberries.blogspot.com/2011/08/ive-been-crocheting-quite-bit-this-week.html">coyote in Toronto</a>, we saw one earlier this summer just off the highway. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzlaXEbrsrQnCPZh42iL9OcEUEsdKQQ1J3v1Vs2RaeCxEalMiMfZz69aelSXyFvWhsA7BLfnSzhsyW6C0dAuh073D-6cFjBIJ82169o0W-NWKV6H5lvH-Ducp_6Q1ut3ULTLyBe1BLhE/s1600/coyotegarden.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="434" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQzlaXEbrsrQnCPZh42iL9OcEUEsdKQQ1J3v1Vs2RaeCxEalMiMfZz69aelSXyFvWhsA7BLfnSzhsyW6C0dAuh073D-6cFjBIJ82169o0W-NWKV6H5lvH-Ducp_6Q1ut3ULTLyBe1BLhE/s640/coyotegarden.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We've still got a few more things to clean up at the garden, some plants to pull up and some general tidying around the garden so that there is less work to do come spring. We definitely don't want to have as much work to do next spring as we did this spring past. </div>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4795312279707151824.post-17281110876824932162011-10-12T14:47:00.000-04:002011-10-12T14:47:08.610-04:00What I Love Wednesday : Buzz Playing in the Leaves<div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;">Now that Autumn is here it is time to start doing all those wonderful things that can only do this time of year, like playing in the leaves! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: left;"><br />

Hurrah for us! Ed hasn't taken much time off of work since Buzz was born and so we thought it was about time he took a couple of weeks off to spend with us doing all sorts of fun things. We went to the zoo, ate ice cream for lunch, took a look at the hockey hall of fame, and generally had a good time. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We ended the time off with a trip up the trans-canada highway to see my sister. I have two sisters, one living right here in the city with me, and another living an 8 hour road trip away. We were lucky enough that my Toronto sister was also heading up to see our road trip sister and so for the very first time we had all 5 of our children together. They all seemed to get along very well, and the chaos was kept to a minimum which was a bonus. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Half way through our road trip we stopped at Science North in Sudbury. With our memberships to the Ontario Science Centre we are able to get into other science centres and museums for free, Science North is one of these places. We had a wonderful time and we will definitely be stopping there again, everything is very hands on and I think that is always a mark of a good museum.There were moments when Ed and I were enjoying the exhibits as much, if not more, then Buzz. Everyone was very approachable and the entire set up of the centre made it very easy to go from one floor to the next, best of all there was so much to look at. Here is a pic of Buzz and Ed playing in the sand and making waterways.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLBQZeOW8fM_v-loyqh2eZS9BUnnI2XJh46nG5AZxuwAKs44tfkUI4OltCBTfAH9TlSl-wJG4nJ4TolTPE0jpV6RuBKEQUwXwEHpfq80Er2I2L4k7I3FBjNJ1Wut4s6vNqbMaC4AxPmg0/s1600/ssm3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLBQZeOW8fM_v-loyqh2eZS9BUnnI2XJh46nG5AZxuwAKs44tfkUI4OltCBTfAH9TlSl-wJG4nJ4TolTPE0jpV6RuBKEQUwXwEHpfq80Er2I2L4k7I3FBjNJ1Wut4s6vNqbMaC4AxPmg0/s640/ssm3.JPG" width="640" /> </a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">To enter Science North exhibits you go down a long rock tunnel, Ed lifted Buzz up so that he could touch the top of it.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzpSeDgV4AFSW1cyQZFocFaz9VonSv8zeE60y9YqXkO4eLUYQnD7r0GRAF_fEkXV7x1SZG0bIT7kqWQLLx6FiLbERptiAMdUzGlp6YQn3jIA5nioToIbM2gMufBBnCNeFijnZpqIV2iE/s1600/ssm4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJzpSeDgV4AFSW1cyQZFocFaz9VonSv8zeE60y9YqXkO4eLUYQnD7r0GRAF_fEkXV7x1SZG0bIT7kqWQLLx6FiLbERptiAMdUzGlp6YQn3jIA5nioToIbM2gMufBBnCNeFijnZpqIV2iE/s640/ssm4.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">After our stop we drove the rest of the way to my road trip sister's house and spent the next few days with herself, her husband, and their three kids. </div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">I made cookies with cookies inside. They were pretty tasty and the kids loved the novelty of it all. Find the recipe <a href="http://veryculinary.com/2011/03/22/oreo-stuffed-chocolate-chip-cookies/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:%20veryculinarycom%20%28Very%20Culinary%29">here</a>.</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd-tGc3n3P5kKvH2flphSR0b6cMwoJ9cDHvrFYdWOtfdrraEguWtYWBgACsuCBNknukenbTG6h1soqpqNvqr6Jg47JbwXNgolOya2yJM9B-Kc68Hk35udNAi6LEYsjF_nPojDkZxE_7L8/s1600/ssm5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgd-tGc3n3P5kKvH2flphSR0b6cMwoJ9cDHvrFYdWOtfdrraEguWtYWBgACsuCBNknukenbTG6h1soqpqNvqr6Jg47JbwXNgolOya2yJM9B-Kc68Hk35udNAi6LEYsjF_nPojDkZxE_7L8/s640/ssm5.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We visited a park near my road trip sister's house, they boys were very fond of the pebble beach and the waterfall. They're both wearing hats that I've made for them, I thought they looked like Yoda and an Ewok while walking in the forest. These two got along famously, at 4 and 2 and a half they seem to be a good age match. Buzz is happy to follow his cousin around, and his cousin is happy to let him do so.</div><br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Now that we're back in town we seem to be in need of a vacation from our vacation. Buzz is now getting over his first ever ear infection, while I managed to get tonsillitis. We're all feeling much better than we were a couple of days ago, but I think we'll be laying low for the next couple of days so that we will be feeling better for thanksgiving. </span>Alexhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15772837634373805531noreply@blogger.com0
